In one hand, it is seen as a ‘taboo’, while in the other hand it is also hunted and perceived in the secret and shame way. Of course, it can not be separated with the complexity of public understanding which perceived sexuality merely as a biological desire or sexual contact between man and women. But, more than that, sexuality related to human existence which contained emotional, love, actualization, expression, perspective, and orientation aspects of other bodies. The coverage of sexuality discourses, in addition talking about ‘sex’ (in the meaning of male and female reproductive organs and its function), in fact also related to other things. For example, about sexual orientation or somebody’s sexual interest to the opposite or similar sex, or both. It is also related to somebody’s gender expression, so he or she will be called as feminine, masculine, tomboy, or macho. Somebody’s gender identity, is also related to the preference on their orientation. So they will call themselves as man, woman, lesbian, gay, transexual, intersex, queer (LGBTIQ), and many more. While female sexuality is limited in the context submissiveness, services, subordination, and should be controlled and chained. That’s why, according to the data of National Commission on the Elimination of Violence Against Women in 2012 which launched that there are 208 discriminative local regulation based on Violence Against Women, which tends to control women. For example, the prohibition of prostitution with the contents that mislead the public, the rules of female dress-code veil, the Ministry Regulation on the steps to implement the Female Excision, pros and cons on the idea of ‘virginity testing’ which initiated of some male public policy makers, the number of rape and sexual violence in public space, and the sexual harassment in the public transportation show that their understanding on sexuality is unfair and degrades women dignity.
Religion, including Islam itself very frankly in discussing sexuality. This is because the sexuality is seen as a ‘nature’ and ‘mercy’ of Allah that should be praised and implemented in right way and full with responsibility. Taking care of the human dignity is God’s command to both sexes, men and women. In addition, the existence of Aisha, wife of The Prophet in delivering hundreds of hadiths, also open the information on sexuality in Islam so it be delivered transparently to make the the true religious teaching can be easily understood. Then, don’t we need to discuss and give the right information to the next generation trough Education on the Sexuality and Reproductive Health and Rights? It’s time to reflect!
